Welcome to H. Strauss

There has almost always been an H. Strauss Clothier in Elmira, New York.  Here is an excerpt from Elmira's historical timeline published in the City of Elmira's Centennial Celebration booklet in 1964.

1864

Elmira chartered as a city on April 7th. First Elmira Council meeting held April 19th. Rosenbaum store opened. Grace Episcopal Church established.

1865

St. Patricks Day flood. Main Street and Lake Street bridges lost. Confederate prisoners released from prison in June.

1870

Lehigh Valley rail lines extended to Elmira. Olivia Langdon married to Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) on January 2nd.

1871

First trip of horse-drawn trolley car on tracks of Elmira & Horseheads Railway Co., August 23rd.

1872

H. Strauss clothing store opened for business.

Historic Elmira, New York
